Bed Time

Have you ever been camping before but froze when it came time for bed? Chances are you have which is why I’m going to help you choose your next cold weather sleeping bag. Sleeping bags come in many different materials, shapes, sizes, and most importantly the temperature rating. When it comes to winter camping this is of the utmost importance because who wants to freeze when you’re trying to sleep?
When choosing a sleeping bag for winter camping, you first need to figure out how cold it’s going to be. This is important because all the sleeping bags have their own temperature ratings. The temperature rating is used to show how warm a bag will keep you in a cold climate. An expert from Adventure Sports Online, an informational resource for outdoor enthusiasts, explains, “You should go with a bag rated to at least 10 or 15 degrees lower than the lowest nighttime temperature you will encounter. It is always easier to unzip and cool off than it is to get warm.” Remember, when you’re choosing a winter sleeping bag, get one that fully covers the climate in your area.
Next on the check list for a winter sleeping bag is the shape and size of it. When choosing a winter sleeping bag there are so many different sizes for them, but did you know that there are two or even three person bags? One of the good factors about these bags is you get body heat from other people so you actually stay warmer. When it comes to the shape you have two choices: the mummy bag which is a snugger fit. This might be a little more uncomfortable because it’s a tight bag, but that keeps the fabric closer to your body so it keeps you warmer. Then there is the regular rectangle bag these are good for the people that want the most room while their sleeping.
Finally, the last feature about a sleeping bag for winter camping is what the material is made of. Sleeping bags can be made from either goose down, or synthetic material. The good thing about goose down is it is very lightweight and warm. Also another big factor about these two materials is the cost of each, the goose down bags are normally the more expensive ones but you might find one cheaper than a synthetic.
The sleeping bag is one of the most important things for camping especially when it’s cold outside. So remember whenever you’re camping to have a warm bag to crawl into at night so your trip won’t be a cold one. So start looking for your new cold weather bag, for your next outdoor adventure now.

  2. Great article. What I'm wondering is where can I buy such a sleeping bag? Five years ago I remember looking at Wal-Mart but couldn't find anything.
